This Tuesday, the Guatemalan immigration authorities announced a new measure due to the increase in the irregular flow of Dominicans who seek to reach the United States and use that destination as a bridge.
As of the second week of February , Dominicans who wish to enter must opt for a visa. This is the type "B" visa, also called "Tourist" or "Traveler".
The Dominican Republic was on the list of visa-exempt countries, however, it is now part of the list of category "B" countries, which require a consular visa.
This implies that Dominicans must fill out the Visa Application Form at the Guatemalan Embassies or Consulates.
In addition, the document will only allow them to stay for 90 days in the Central American country.
Requirements
Guatemala considers foreigners who enter the country solely for recreation as “tourists”, while foreigners who enter the country for scientific, cultural, sporting or academic purposes “visitors”.
According to the website of the Guatemalan Institute of Migration (IGM), in both cases their stay in Guatemala will be "for the purpose of immigration" and for a period of no more than 90 days , extendable for the same time only once.
For their stay in that territory, "they must have sufficient economic means to live decently in the country" and, during their stay in Guatemala, they may not dedicate themselves to occupying any public or private job, nor establish themselves commercially.
However, they can change their migratory status, and must abide by the provisions of Guatemalan legislation, without having to leave Guatemala for this.
Those interested must present the original valid passport (six months) and a legalized photocopy or photocopy of the complete passport legalized by the consulate of the country of origin or the nearest one.
In addition, they will have to present an international credit card, bank letter or traveler's checks in their name.
Also, round-trip ticket for air, land or sea transportation.
El IGM indica que para los individuos dentro de los países categoría “B”, con visa Americana, Canadiense o de Schengen vigente, no es necesario tramitar visa guatemalteca.
Antes
Hasta la fecha, los ciudadanos de este país podían ingresar a Guatemala únicamente con su pasaporte.
Los requisitos que debían cumplir eran: pasaporte vigente (mínimo 6 meses de vigencia), boleto de avión ida y vuelta, realización de una entrevista y demostración de solvencia económica.
También la reservación de hotel o constancia del lugar donde se alojará durante su estadía en el país.
