LOS ÁNGELES. El homenaje de Madonna al recientemente fallecido Prince y las lágrimas de Celine Dion recordando a su difunto esposo pusieron la emoción a unos premios Billboard dominados por Adele y The Weeknd.
El momento más destacado de la velada llegó al final de la ceremonia, celebrada en el T-Mobile Arena de Las Vegas (Nevada), cuando Madonna salió al escenario sentada en un trono de terciopelo morado y brillantes, luciendo un traje de pantalón en color lila y portando un bastón, en clara referencia a la figura de Prince, fallecido el pasado 21 de abril.
Madonna cantó una versión del clásico “Nothing Compares 2 U”, escrito por Prince y popularizado por Sinead O’Connor, mientras aparecían imágenes del artista de Mineápolis en la pantalla del recinto.
Instantes después, el colofón llegó con la aparición de Stevie Wonder, que formó dueto con Madonna para entornar la mítica “Purple Rain” y completar así un sentido tributo.
“Gracias Prince Rogers Nelson por todo lo que nos has dado”, afirmó Madonna antes de despedirse.
Previamente, Dion, que llevó a cabo una versión del tema de Queen “The Show Must Go On”, recogió entre lágrimas el premio al icono del año, entregado por su hijo René Charles.
“Es un tremendo honor”, afirmó la canadiense.
“La música ha sido mi pasión desde que tengo memoria (...) Gracias a la gente que creyó en mí. A mi madre, que escribió mi primera canción. A mis hijos. Y a mi esposo, que sé que seguirá cuidándome desde arriba. El espectáculo debe continuar”, indicó alzando el galardón.
Dion perdió en enero a su marido, René Angélil, y a Daniel, uno de sus hermanos, por cáncer.
Fue la primer actuación en televisión de la artista desde esa tragedia.
La gala arrancó con un tributo a Britney Spears, que a sus 34 años recibió el premio Millennium en reconocimiento a sus “extraordinarios logros e influencia dentro de la industria musical”.
Se trata de un galardón que únicamente se ha entregado dos veces anteriormente: Beyoncé (2011) y Whitney Houston (2012).
Spears completó una actuación de cerca de 10 minutos con una mezcla de sus grandes éxitos sin mostrarse demasiado ágil en sus movimientos y cantando en “playback”, pero con todo su carisma intacto ante un público completamente entregado.
Adele, que no estuvo presente en la gala al estar en plena gira mundial, se llevó el premio principal, el de mejor artista del año, y otras tres estatuillas: mejor artista femenina, mejor canción con mayores ventas (”Hello”) y Top Billboard 200 Album (”25”).
Además, protagonizó uno de los momentos más destacados con el estreno de su nuevo vídeo musical, “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)”.
Sin embargo, el artista más exitoso de la noche fue The Weeknd, con un total de siete premios, entre ellos el de mejor álbum R&B (”Beauty Behind the Madness”), mejor canción R&B (”The Hills”) y el de artista con las canciones más reproducidas en Internet.
El evento consistió en una gala de tres horas dedicadas casi en exclusividad a actuaciones musicales, entre las que destacaron las de Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Gwen Stefani y Blake Shelton, Nick Jonas y Demi Lovato.
Los artistas Ludacris y Ciara fueron los anfitriones de la ceremonia que contaba con The Weeknd, gracias a sus 19 nominaciones en 16 categorías, como el máximo favorito.
“Los premios Billboard son como los Óscar de la música, con la excepción de que aquí tenemos a artistas negros”, dijo Ludacris con ironía en el arranque de una gala a la que asistieron celebridades como Jessica Alba, Heidi Klum, Kate Beckinsale, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Steven Tyler y Seal, entre otros.
En las categorías dedicadas a artistas latinos, Nicky Jam y Enrique Iglesias se impusieron con “El Perdón” como la mejor canción, en tanto que Juan Gabriel se llevó el premio al mejor álbum con “Los Dúos de Juan Gabriel”.
Asimismo, Romeo Santos fue nombrado mejor artista.

Adele Beats Out Taylor Swift For Top Artist At 2016 Billboard Music Awards
The Billboard Music Awards’ Top Artist prize is one of the most prestigious awards out there, and tonight, May 22, Adele took home the honor. She beat out Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and more for the award!
The world has decided who’s the best artist right now, and unsurprisingly, it’s Adele! At the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, the biggest award of the night was finally announced, and we’re so glad that it’s the “Hello” singer. See what she had to say in her speech!We can’t think of anyone who deserves this award more than Adele does! After giving us the gift of her album 25 as part of her epic comeback, she dropped incredible music videos right and left for her singles “Hello” and “When We Were Young”, plus debuted the video for “Send My Love” tonight during the awards show. Top Artist is so deserved for the British superstar!
Of course, the competition was stiff this year. Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift were also up for the award, and they’ve both had huge years so far. Taylor accepted the Grammy for album of the year for 1989 at the ceremony in Feb. of this year, and she won the Best Tour Award at the 2016 iHeart Radio Music Awards in April. Meanwhile, Justin took home the award for International Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards in Feb., plus won Best Dance Recording at the Grammys for “Where Are Ü Now”. Both artists have a ton to be proud of!

Bust out those dancing shoes! Some of music’s biggest names will take the stage on Sunday, May 22, to celebrate the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, including Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Kesha and Madonna.
